How to Become a Nail Technician

If you’re passionate about creativity, beauty, and working with people, then becoming a nail technician could be an incredibly rewarding career path for you. With all the various skills you can learn in modern nail technology schools – from a simple manicure to intricate nail art – you’ll have the chance to help your clients look and feel their absolute best, all while building a flexible and potentially very lucrative career.

This guide will walk you through the process of becoming a nail technician, what to expect, and all the skills you’ll gain along the way.

What Does a Nail Technician Do?

  • Manicures and pedicures
  • Nail shaping and cuticle care
  • Acrylic, gel, and builder nail applications
  • Nail art and design
  • Keeping on top of the all-important sanitation and hygiene practices.

At Austin Kade Academy, students don’t just learn nail care – they also learn the science behind nails, including nail anatomy, chemistry, and how to keep clients safe.

More than just nail treatments, nail techs build strong relationships with their clients and many even go on to run their own businesses.

Step 1: Make Sure You Meet the Basic Requirements

Before you can even think about signing up for a nail technology program, you’ll need to meet a couple of basic requirements:

  • In most US states, you must be at least 16 or 17 years old to enroll in nail tech school
  • You have to have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • You have to be able to provide valid identification

These are pretty standard requirements for getting started in the nail industry and preparing to get your nail tech license.

Step 2: Enroll in a Nail Technician Program

Getting accepted into a state-approved training program is the most important step in becoming a nail tech. At Austin Kade Academy, the 600-hour nail technology program covers everything from nail sciences to nail art techniques and includes a solid foundation in sanitation and safety practices.

Step 3: Get Some Hands-on Experience

One of the best things about nail schools is the hands-on training you get. At Austin Kade, students get to practice their skills with real clients under supervision at our student salon. This helps you build confidence, improve your speed and technique, and learn all about customer service.

Step 4: Pass Your State Licensing Exam

After completing your training hours, it’s time to pass your state licensing exam. In Idaho, this typically includes a written exam and a practical (hands-on) exam. Austin Kade trains students to prepare for these exams.

Step 5: Start Your Career as a Nail Tech

Once you’re licensed, you can start building your career in a variety of settings. You could work in a nail salon or spa, a full-service beauty salon, even your own business. With the right skills and dedication, many nail techs build a loyal client base and even become entrepreneurs.

How Long Does It Take to Become a Nail Tech?

One of the best things about becoming a licensed nail technician is how quickly you can get started. At Austin Kade Academy, the 600-hour program will take you around 17 weeks (full-time) to 23 weeks (part-time). That’s just a few months to go from beginner to licensed professional.

What You’ll Learn in Nail Tech School

A quality nail technician program will give you so much more than just technical skills. You’ll learn all about nail anatomy and health, infection control and sanitation, product chemistry, and more. Austin Kade’s curriculum is designed to prepare students to master technical skills as well as build a sustainable career.

Why Should You Choose a Career in Nail Technology?

Becoming a nail technician has a lot of benefits, including fast entry into the workforce, a creative outlet, flexible schedules, and opportunities for self-employment. And with the beauty industry experiencing so much growth, it’s a career with a bright future.

Your Path Awaits

Are you ready to turn your passion for nails into a career? Enrolling in a nail technology program is the perfect place to start.
