Cosmetology Vs Esthetics

cosmetologist and esthetician

One of the biggest and most exciting parts of your beauty journey is deciding which program is right for you! Since this choice is a key factor in personalizing your beauty career, you want to make sure that you spend time learning about your different options!

If you’re going back and forth between studying cosmetology or esthetics, it’s important that you first understand what services you’d be learning and what career path you could expect from each program. Don’t worry because we go through and explain everything you need to know about each program so you can choose the one best for you!

What is Cosmetology?

First things first, let’s start by explaining the basics of each program and what services you could be learning. When imagining a cosmetologist, you may picture someone who works in a salon and primarily focuses on providing hair services.

While that is part of what a cosmetologist does and they may even choose to specialize in cutting or coloring hair, that’s far from the only thing a cosmetologist can do! In fact, a cosmetologist may even decide to focus their career on another service like nail care, makeup, or even skin care. It really just depends on you and what you want your future to look like!

What Careers Can I Have as a Cosmetologist?

With so many skills to learn, there is a world of possibilities open for you to pursue a career. Cosmetology is all about expressing your creativity through multiple beauty services. You may even be surprised at what you can do! Here are just some possibilities of careers you could have as a licensed cosmetologist:

  • Hairstylist
  • Product representative
  • Platform artist
  • Educational consultant
  • Salon manager/owner

The wide variety of what you’re able to do as a cosmetologist is one of the best parts of choosing this program. You may even be able to choose a job you love that allows you to pick your own schedule! Many cosmetologists have the benefit of controlling when they want to work by setting clients’ appointments when it works best for them! This flexible scheduling is just one more reason why cosmetology could be the perfect future for you!

What is Esthetics?

Now that you know more about what cosmetology is and what you could expect, it’s time to learn what makes esthetics different. If you’re more interested in a career where you can help people feel better through skin care services, then esthetics might be more suited for you. There’s no better feeling than knowing that your job that you love doing is making a positive impact in people’s lives!

While some cosmetologists will know how to perform basic skin care procedures, an esthetician is trained as a professional in multiple basic and advanced techniques. Facials, hair removal, dermatology, and makeup are all examples of what services you could be doing as an esthetician.

What Careers Can I Have as an Esthetician?

Like cosmetology, your career as an esthetician will depend on what you want your future to look like. Maybe you want to specialize in one skin care technique so clients can know they’re getting the best when they come to you. Or you may want to have each day be different and work in a spa setting that offers a variety of services. Here are some examples of jobs you can have as a licensed esthetician:

  • Beauty spa esthetician
  • Doctor’s office esthetician
  • Medical spa esthetician
  • Spa manager/owner
