Halloween Special Effects Makeup Clinic

“Killer Housewife” by Camille Klingler

Beauty school is an excellent opportunity for students to flex their creative muscles and try new things, and special effects makeup is no exception! Austin Kade Academy holds a Halloween-themed special effects makeup clinic each year where the students can learn many of the basics of prosthetic makeup and showcase their talents. It’s a fun and creative way to help students explore new things!

What is Special Effects Makeup?

Special effects makeup, commonly called SFX or prosthetic makeup for short, is the art of using prosthetic sculpting, molding, and casting to create looks and effects that can’t be done with ordinary makeup artistry. SFX makeup is most commonly use to create injuries, disfigurement, or other effects on someone. Some effects are more subtle, such as pronounced cheekbones and brow ridge to turn someone into a goblin or gremlin, while other effects are much more dramatic with fake injuries, gashes, and anything else you can come up with.

About The Austin Kade SFX Clinic

The Austin Kade Academy SFX clinic is held each year around the month of October to suit the Halloween season. It’s an exciting opportunity for our cosmetology students to explore new SFX makeup techniques and opportunities. The clinic is designed to introduce basic principles so that students have the opportunity to take the training and run with it. By the end of the clinic, we hold a contest among the students, and the winners get to have their SFX makeup featured in a special photoshoot with a professional photographer! It’s a great opportunity for students to flex their talents and build their resume with some impressive and creative work!

Why is The SFX Clinic Important?

SFX makeup is an important skill for beauty school students who want to consider career options in makeup artistry for media. Prosthetic makeup is a huge part of television, movies, and more, so being able to apply SFX makeup can give our students the opportunity to work in those roles. The clinic is also a chance for students to try something in an environment without commitment. It’s included as part of the cosmetology program, so students can take advantage of the clinic to discover if SFX makeup or other makeup artistry careers are something they are interested in. More than anything else, the SFX clinic is fun.

Why is Makeup Important for Cosmetologists to Learn?

While many cosmetologists work with clients to help them with their everyday looks, there are many cosmetologists who help clients with special occasions. For example, many brides go to a salon to have their hair styled on the big day, and can even have a bridal makeup specialist complete the look. Monsters, ghouls, and zombies need some professional attention as well! Rounding out your education to include SFX makeup can allow you to do head-to-toe looks for Halloween, movies, TV, Instagram, or anywhere else you want your skills showcased!
